Texas Holdem
Players of Texas Holdem
Up to 10 players are allowed to play at one table.
Betting structure of Texas Holdem
Texas Holdem is played with two blinds, a small blind and a big blind. A blind is a forced bet that two players have to post before the cards are dealt. The betting structures available for Texas Holdem are Limit, Pot-Limit and No-Limit.
The play of Texas Holdem
1. The blinds are posted by the two players to the left of the dealer. The dealer is indicated by a round white button with the letter ”D” in front of the player. The dealer button moves clockwise around the table after each hand.
2. Each player is dealt two cards face down (”pocket cards”). These cards can only be seen by the player that receives them.
3. The first round of betting starts with the player to the left of the big blind.
4. Three community cards (”the flop”) are placed face up in the centre of the table. These cards can be used by all players, together with the pocket cards, to combine a hand.
5. The second round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer.
6. A fourth community card (“the turn”) is placed in the centre of the table.
7. The third round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer.
8. A fifth and last community card (“the river”) is placed in the centre of the table.
9. The last round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer.
10. Showdown – The player with the best hand wins the pot. Each player combines the five community cards and their two pocket cards to create the best five card hand. If two or more players have the best hand they will split the pot.
General Rule of Texas Holdem
Available betting structures of Texas Holdem
Limit of Texas Holdem
In structured limit games, all bets/raises are a set amount. The only valid bet/raise is the current limit, for example $5 on the first two rounds and $10 in the last two rounds in a $5-$10 Hold’em game. There may be a maximum of 4 bet/raises in a round of betting. This includes a bet, raise, re-raise and a cap.
No-Limit of Texas Holdem
In no-limit, a valid bet/raise must be at least the current limit and the last bet/raise. No higher limit is available, other than the amount of chips that the player has at the table. No maximum number of raises exists.
Pot-Limit of Texas Holdem
In pot-limit, the valid bet/raise must be at least the current limit and the last bet/raise. A pot-limit bet/raise may be maximum the value of the pot, plus all bets at the table including the current players call. No maximum number of raises exists.
The Betting Round of Texas Holdem
Check of Texas Holdem
If no player has placed a bet or if the player is on an un-raised big blind, the player has the alternative to check. That means declining to bet, but retaining the option to remain in the hand if someone else bets, or even to call or raise if someone else bets. A player can not “check” if someone else has placed a bet. If another player bets after a check, the checking player is forced to either call, raise or fold.
Fold of Texas Holdem
A player always has the option to fold. When a player folds his hand he is no longer in the game until the next hand.
Call of Texas Holdem
A player has the option to call when another player has placed a bet. When the player calls, he puts in the same amount as the bet in the pot and the betting round is ended unless another player raises.
Bet of Texas Holdem
If no one else has placed a bet, the player can bet himself. A bet will force the other players to either call, raise or fold. The amount of the bet depends on the betting structure.
Raise of Texas Holdem
The player has the option to raise another player’s bet. The player then raises to an amount higher than the bet, which forces the other players to either call, re-raise or fold.
